Habitat loss, and increasing temperatures, especially around bush fires, have caused their numbers to diminish. Spekkies don't sweat, so they lick themselves to cool down, but this can cause dehydration and death. As an important member of the tropical rainforest ecosystem, they help maintain diversity through spreading seeds and pollinating trees. They are also very cool to watch, migrating at dusk to their favourite trees for the night.
